Clean-up Day Andermatt: Trash-collecting in the alpine countryside
This year's Clean-up Day was a great success. Nearly 50 volunteer helpers took the Gütsch Express and Schneehüenerstock Express gondolas up to the highland terrain to look for litter that had accumulated during the winter along the ski slopes and hiking trails. And they collected quite a bit: about 290 kilograms, all told.
On Saturday under gorgeous skies, 47 adults and children met at the valley station of the Gütsch Express gondola in Andermatt. They had come from all over Switzerland to take part in Clean-up Day, organised by Andermatt Swiss Alps, Protect Our Winters Switzerland and Summit Foundation . Also in attendance were numerous ski instructors from the Swiss Snowsports School in Andermatt. Armed with gloves and sacks supplied by the Summit Foundation, the helpers got to work straight away. A lot of debris had been collected in the area, particularly under the chairlifts and gondolas, on the ski slopes and around the military facilities.

The groups met back up at the mid-station of the Gütsch Express gondola at 1 p.m., where the team from the Summit Foundation weighed the trash and the helpers got busy sorting it. A lot of wood and metal had been collected, meaning that most of the material can be recycled. The most unusual finds originated from the army, including ammunition from military exercises.
This was followed by a thank-you for the helpers in the form of a relaxed get-together with food and drinks at the Matti family restaurant on Nätschen.
